- Departure from the Museum by Car:
Regardless of the direction you are traveling, departure
by car begins in the same way. Leave the
Carnegie parking lot, cross Forbes Avenue and go directly up S. Craig Street; at first traffic light turn left onto Fifth Avenue; continue on Fifth Avenue through 12 traffic lights; at the 13th traffic light
turn left onto Craft
Street. At this point choose one of the three
alternatives:
- To go EAST on I-376, continue straight on Craft Street
and turn left at the second traffic light onto the Boulevard of the Allies;
stay in the right hand lane and follow signs to I-376E. This will take you to I-76 (PA Turnpike).
- To go SOUTH, WEST, or to the AIRPORT from Pittsburgh,
continue on Craft Street to the very first traffic light and turn right onto
Forbes Avenue (narrowly two-way here). Continue to stop sign, then turn right onto Boulevard of the Allies;
stay in right lane and take first exit on right to I-376W and Ft. Pitt Tunnel.
Follow signs to I-279S and airport. This
will take you to I-79.
- To go NORTH from Pittsburgh, continue on Craft Street to the very first traffic light and turn right onto Forbes Avenue (narrowly two-way). Continue to stop sign, then turn right onto Boulevard of the Allies;
stay in left lane and follow signs to Crosstown Boulevard and I-579; carefully take all signs to North I-579,
which merges without choice into I-279N. In about 12 miles I-279N joins I-79
headed north to Erie.
- Travel by Bus: The bus station (Greyhound Bus Lines, 11 Saint & Liberty Avenues, Pittsburgh PA 15233; 412-392-6513 or 412-392-6500) is in downtown Pittsburgh with easiest transportation to Oakland by taxi, $10-11.
- Local: Local buses
cost $2.25 exact change in inner two zones, more for outer zones.
- Taxis: can sometimes be hailed on the streets
in downtown Pittsburgh, but in most of the rest of the city, including Oakland, it is difficult to find a taxi without telephoning
to arrange a pick-up.
