GETTING TO CARNEGIE MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

TRANSPORTATION
  • To and From Pittsburgh Airport:
    • BUS: Local bus 28X (Airport Flyer) operates 7 days a week at frequent intervals from roughly 6AM to 1 AM inbound (Airport-Downtown-Oakland), and 5AM to 11:30PM outbound (Oakland-Downtown-Airport).  Fare is $2.25 exact change.
    • SHUTTLE:  Express Shuttle (first come, first served) runs every half hour 7 days a week, 5AM to 9PM, from airport to any hotel in downtown or Oakland area.  Cost is $24 one-way, $42 round trip.  There is a number for a dispatcher if one wants to make other arrangements: 412-472-3180.
    • TAXI:  from the airport, taxis cost roughly $42, depending on traffic and idle time; ask around at the limo pick-up area for others heading for Oakland and you may be able to form a group to share a cab.
  • Arrival by Car:
    • Coming from the SOUTH or WEST, take I-79N to I-279 (Exit 59A), following signs to Pittsburgh.  Continue on I-279 through Ft. Pitt tunnel; be in the right-hand lane.  Immediately after tunnel, cross over Ft. Pitt Bridge and exit onto I-376E (signs to Monroeville).  Stay in right-hand lane on I-376 for about 1 mile and take Oakland exit (Exit 2A) onto Forbes Ave (one-way traffic).  Follow Forbes Avenue through 10 traffic lights past the tall Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh on your left, and The Carnegie on your right.  At the 11th traffic light (S Craig Street) turn right into Carnegie parking lot.   On Saturdays and Sundays, a fixed parking rate of $3.00 is charged for whatever period of time you are there; unfortunately, that amount is not refundable!  You have arrived!
    • From the AIRPORT, follow signs to Pittsburgh and I-279, then proceed as above.
    • From the EAST or SOUTHEAST on I-76 (PA Turnpike), take Exit 57 onto I-376W, following signs to Pittsburgh for about 10 miles.  Pass through Squirrel Hill Tunnel and in about 1 mile take Oakland exit (Exit 3B, Route 885N).  From exit bear right and up onto Bates Street, through stoplight and then straight on up Bates St. until a T-intersection (Bouquet Street).  Turn left at "T" and then turn right at first traffic light; this is Forbes Avenue.  Continue past tall Cathedral of Learning on the left and The Carnegie on your right.  Turn right at S Craig Street into The Carnegie parking lot.   On Saturdays and Sundays, a fixed parking rate of $3.00 is charged for whatever period of time you are there; unfortunately, that amount is not refundable!
    • From the NORTH on I-79S, take Exit 72 (to the left) onto I-279S.  Go about 11 miles and take Exit 8A to I-579S (Veterans’ Bridge, Monroeville-Oakland).  Follow signs for South I-579 To I-376E.  Take Oakland-Monroeville exit to I-376E onto Boulevard of the Allies.  Continue on Boulevard for about 1 mile and continue straight following sign to Forbes Ave.-Oakland.  Get in right hand lane and WATCH CAREFULLY to take first inconspicuous exit to the right marked  with orange and blue sign Oakland-Forbes Avenue.  This exit leads sharply and abruptly down under to Forbes Avenue (one-way); continue on Forbes Ave. through 10 traffic lights past The Carnegie on the right.  At the 11th traffic light (S Craig Street) turn right into The Carnegie parking lot.  On Saturdays and Sundays, a fixed parking rate of $3.00 is charged for whatever period of time you are there; unfortunately, that amount is not refundable!

  • Departure from the Museum by Car:
Regardless of the direction you are traveling, departure by car begins in the same way.  Leave the Carnegie parking lot, cross Forbes Avenue and go directly up S. Craig Street; at first traffic light turn left onto Fifth Avenue; continue on Fifth Avenue through 12 traffic lights; at the 13th traffic light turn left onto Craft Street.
At this point choose one of the three alternatives:
    • To go EAST on I-376, continue straight on Craft Street and turn left at the second traffic light onto the Boulevard of the Allies; stay in the right hand lane and follow signs to I-376E.  This will take you to I-76 (PA Turnpike).
    • To go SOUTH, WEST, or to the AIRPORT from Pittsburgh, continue on Craft Street to the very first traffic light and turn right onto Forbes Avenue (narrowly two-way here).  Continue to stop sign, then turn right onto Boulevard of the Allies; stay in right lane and take first exit on right to I-376W and Ft. Pitt Tunnel. Follow signs to I-279S and airport.  This will take you to I-79.
    • To go NORTH from Pittsburgh, continue on Craft Street to the very first traffic light and turn right onto Forbes Avenue (narrowly two-way).  Continue to stop sign, then turn right onto Boulevard of the Allies; stay in left lane and follow signs to Crosstown Boulevard and I-579; carefully take all signs to North I-579, which merges without choice into I-279N. In about 12 miles I-279N joins I-79 headed north to Erie.

  • Travel by Bus: The bus station (Greyhound Bus Lines, 11 Saint & Liberty Avenues, Pittsburgh PA 15233; 412-392-6513 or 412-392-6500) is in downtown Pittsburgh with easiest transportation to Oakland by taxi, $10-11.
  • Local:  Local buses cost $2.25 exact change in inner two zones, more for outer zones.
  • Taxis: can sometimes be hailed on the streets in downtown Pittsburgh, but in most of the rest of the city, including Oakland, it is difficult to find a taxi without telephoning to arrange a pick-up.
