Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary
( 6°44' N, 1°41' W).
Owabi Sanctuary lies 16 km west of
Kumasi and is one of Ghana’s smallest forest
conservation areas. The sanctuary encompasses
approximately 7200 ha that surrounds Owabi
Reservoir, of which approximately 1200 ha is
forest. The reserve was established initially to
protect a major source of drinking water for Kumasi,
a city of more than one million people.
Responsibility for protection of the reserve was
turned over to the Department of Game and Wildlife
in the early 1960’s when the lands were designated a
Wildlife Sanctuary. Despite its status as a
wildlife refuge, poaching is not uncommon. There
are well-worn footpaths throughout and ample
evidence of human encroachment from the outer
boundaries of the reserve. Although the forest is
far from pristine, large sections remain mostly
intact. |
