Gyakye Sacred Grove
( 6°33' N, 1°31' W).
Gyakye Grove is a small,
approximately 11.5 ha forest remnant located in the
town of Gyakye on the Lake Bosumtwi road, about 20
km south of Kumasi. Apparently, this sacred grove
was originally nearly 260 ha, but has since been
severely reduced in size by encroaching farms.
Canopy cover is highly degraded in a number of areas
and light penetration in these particular sections
is substantial. Other sections of the forest
however seem generally intact. The grove can be
seen from the main road and is a short hike along a
path that originates from the grounds of the former
primary school.
Gyakye is the only sacred grove for
which formal by-laws have been enacted by community
authorities to promote continued protection. Ghana
Association for the Conservation of Nature (GACON),
a conservation focused NGO based in Kumasi, forged a
partnership with the town in 1989 to assist with
conservation management of the grove.
Unfortunately, these community-based protective
measures are being disregarded by some and they have
consequently not been very effective. On our recent
sampling excursions, we have encountered local
residents in the process of chopping down trees and
there is obvious evidence in the grove of additional
felling of trees.
